Prop 50: Authorizes Temporary Changes to Congressional District Maps in Response to Texas’ Partisan Redistricting. Legislative Constitutional Amendment

Since Trump entered office in January 2025, his administration has slashed funding for critical programs supporting working families, terrorized immigrant communities, and undermined civil liberties for marginalized groups. Now, the Trump administration has moved to cement his party’s power through redrawing Texas election maps in favor of Republicans and providing them with five new seats to cushion their majority in Congress. This extreme gerrymandering amounts to no less than rigging, cheating and stealing the election so Trump’s party wins no matter what.

As a counter response to Texas, California lawmakers approved maps that would create 5 new Democratic seats within the state, which constituents will have an opportunity to vote on this fall in Proposition 50.

Under the Trump administration, AAPI communities are being targeted by an authoritarian takeover. Trump’s approval ratings have plummeted during his time in office; Republicans know their billionaire agenda is unpopular, and they are doing everything they can to stay in power. Passing Prop 50 gives AAPI communities a fighting chance to realize the future we deserve.

How would Prop 50 Impact AAPI Communities?

The proposed maps do not make dramatic changes in representation for most AAPI voters across the state. Between current and proposed maps, there remain 10 districts that are at least 20% Asian American. Several districts that were created by the 2021 Independent Redistricting Commission to keep Asian American communities of interest together are relatively or completely unchanged.

The proposed maps offer Asian Americans greater electoral power in certain districts. If Prop 50 passes, the total number of districts where Asian Americans represent the largest racial group among the district’s voters would increase from 3 to 5. While AAPI communities of interest will be split between districts in Sacramento, AAPI voters drawn into CA-3 will have the opportunity to impact a newly competitive House race.

This greater electoral power would help Asian Americans act on issues most important to them. Last year, an AAPI FORCE-EF survey of Asian American voters in California revealed that to over 4 in 5 Asian Americans in the state, jobs and the economy, health care, inflation, and social security and Medicare, are very important issues to them personally in deciding how to vote. These new maps could provide for Asian Americans to have a bigger impact on these interests.

We need YOU to help us win against authoritarianism!

During the first week of October, AAPI FORCE will be hosting a week of action to encourage early voting, push out support for Prop 50, and curb intimidation at the polls. As we continue to fight against the Trump administration’s attacks on immigrants, working families, people of color, queer and trans folks, and our most marginalized communities, it is more important than ever to show up to the polls and act decisively against authoritarianism.
